Sermon Notes:
Light Up the City

Pastor Jeff Wallace

The more we point people to THE LIGHT, the more that the God of the universe, who is so crazy about us will be glorified! Pastor Jeff Wallace continues in our Oh Light series with a message on how we are meant to be light in a dark world. Jesus came so that we might have His light within us, it’s time to use that light for his goodness. Be encouraged to be the light of Christ to those around you!

John 1:3 NIV
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

God is calling us to be the city on the hill; to light it up and show Jesus for all the world to see.

Matthew 5:13-16 NIV
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of Ul

Ultimately Jesus calls upon us be the salt, the light and be a blessing to all.

Romans 12:2 NIV

2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

2 Corinthians 6:14 NIV

14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

Matthew 5:3-12 NIV

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. prophets who were before you.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Jesus tells us in Matthew that if we act according to His commandments from the Beatitudes, we are useful and valuable – salt to all those around us but if we ignore His instructions we will have lost our saltiness and be worthless to those around us.

As Christ’s followers we are commanded to be salt; to honor and glorify God.

Colossians 4:6 NIV

6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

The second thing that Jesus speaks to us about is that we are the light of the world, so that all who are in darkness will see the light.

We should always want our light to shine.

True light cannot be hidden.

We need to let our light shine so that other may see and know who Jesus Christ is.

John 8:12 NIV

12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The difference between salt and light is that salt is the measure of character and light the measure of your faith that you are willing to share.

Revelation 21:23 NIV

23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.

The darkness pretends to be the light.

Your light will not always be welcome, some want to remain hidden in the darkness.

Ephesians 5:13 NIV

13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.

As a church God calls on us to be the city on a hill, the shining example of the love and the light of God.

John 1:4 NIV

4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

Let the Gospel light up our lives to show the love of Jesus.

Genuine faith in Jesus turns a person from the darkness in to the light.

1 Peter 2:9 NIV

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

We are blessed to be a blessing others.

We’ve be called out of the darkness to be the salt and the light and lead others out of the darkness.

Where are the places in your life where you could let the light given to you shine?

Who could you bring into the light?

It is time for us to be the city on the hill and let our light shine like a lighthouse, a beacon to bring everyone to Jesus.

Closing Prayer: Ken Smith

Never forget, God is in you and with you always. He will never forget you, He will never turn away. He is listening and always, God Loves You No Matter What!
