Selected Bible Reading for Mother’s Day (and everyday)

Mother’s Day is more than just a day for cards, chocolate, breakfast in bed, and reservations at crowded restaurants. Mother’s Day is a celebration that finds solid support in biblical principles and commands.

While these Bible verses for Mother’s Day may not have any direct references to “Mother’s Day,” you’ll find plenty of teaching on honoring mothers and wives, revering them, and giving them generous love and recognition for the role they play in our lives.

1. Proverbs 31:10-12

Who could ever find a wife like this one- she is a woman of strength and mighty valor! She’s full of wealth and wisdom, the price paid for her was greater than many jewels. Her husband has entrusted his heart to her, for she brings him the rich spoils of victory. All throughout her life she brings him what is good, and not evil. – Proverbs 31:10-12

2. 1 Peter 3:4

You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. – 1 Peter 3:4

3. Psalm 113:9

God’s grace provides for the barren ones a joyful home with children so that even childless couples find a family. He makes them happy parents surrounded by their pride and joy. That’s the God we praise, so give it all to him! – Psalm 113:9

Mother’s Day is difficult for some women who may desire to be a mother, but who face the inability to bear children. In this passage, God describes how he gives women great joy, even those who experience the pain of barrenness.

4. Isaiah 49:15

Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? – Isaiah 49:15

This passage praises mothers as symbols of amazing compassion, never forgetting their beloved children.

5. Joshua 24:15

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15

6. Proverbs 6:20-22

My child, obey your father’s godly instruction and follow your mother’s life-giving teaching. Fill your heart with their advice and let your life be shaped by what they’ve taught you. Their wisdom will guide you wherever you go and keep you from bringing harm to yourself. Their instruction will whisper to you at every sunrise and direct you through a brand new day. – Proverbs 6:20-22

A mother’s teaching is to be prized. In this Proverbs passage, instruction from a mother is used as a symbol of a faithful companion all through one’s life.

7. Isaiah 66:13

As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you. – Isaiah 66:13

God likens himself to a mother, bringing to mind the incredible comforting ability of a loving mother.

8. Colossians 3:24

Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. – Colossians 3:24

9. Proverbs 23:22-25

Give respect to your father and mother, for without them you wouldn’t be here. And don’t neglect them when they grow old. Embrace the truth and hold it close. Don’t let go of wisdom, instruction and life-giving understanding. When a father observes his child living in godliness, he is ecstatic with joy-nothing makes him prouder! So may your father’s heart bust with joy and your mother’s soul be filled with gladness because of you. – Proverbs 23:22-25

Throughout Scripture, children are encouraged to care for their mother and to bring them joy.

10. John 19:25-27

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. – John 19:25-27

This passage demonstrates Christ’s love and care for his mother, giving us a lesson on how we should treat our mothers.

11. Romans 8:38-39

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:38-39

12. Psalm 127:3

Children are God’s love-gift; they are heaven’s generous reward.  – Psalm 127:3
