Sermon Notes:
Light of the World
Pastor Justin Miller
Jesus is the Light of the World!
In this season we remember that our Savior, the Holy Son of God came to us as a baby to bring light and hope to a world in need. The truth is that Jesus is still bringing light and hope to a world today. Join us for our Christmas series as we explore what it means for His light to shine brightly IN us and THROUGH us as followers of Jesus!
Romans 8:28 (AMP)
John 1:1-17 NIV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.
8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”)
16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
John makes it clear that Jesus is the light of the world.
Jesus is the light in the darkness. This world is dark and without Jesus there is no light and we cannot find our way.
Colossians 1:15 NIV
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
John 14:6 NIV
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is the King of King, Lord of Lords.
When we are used to living in the darkness of the world, we avoid the light of Jesus Christ.
John 3:19-21 NIV
19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.
20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.
21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
Psalms 139:13 NIV
13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
The darkness of the world hates the light.
If you love the light the darkness hates you, too.
Matthew 19:4-5 NIV
4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?
The darkness pretends to be the light.
2 Corinthians 11:14 NIV
And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
The darkness wants us to believe that the darkness is light and the Light of Jesus is the darkness.
1 John 1:5-7 New International Version
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[a] sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
God is calling us into the Light.
Psalm 119:105 New International Version
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Before the road to Damascus, Saul was living in darkness, lead by his feelings and his sense of self-righteousness.
He was blinded by the light of Jesus and couldn’t see for several days until the scales fell from His eyes and he could see Jesus clearly.
John 1:5-12 New International Version
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.
Let the light of God change your life and change you today.
Step into the Light and let God to change you today.
