Sermon Notes
"Overflow: Joy"
Pastor Justin Miller
Romans 15:13 New International Version
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
God wants you to be filled with all the fullness of God.
God wants you filled so you can be spilled.
God wants to fill you with all joy.
Joy: A feeling of inner delight, a deep abiding presence of the spirit of God
When you are filled with joy given from the Holy Spirit you spill over – or re-joice.
1 Thessalonians 5:16 NIV
Rejoice always,
The command is to "Rejoice always."
Share and show the joy always.
What if I don’t have any joy?
God know you won’t have joy or feel joy always but He wants you to rejoice.
Eventually if you are doing the right thing you will begin to feel the right things.
God is not telling you to always feel joy he telling you to practice joy. And when we have faith to believe that’s when powerful things begin to happen.
Go against feelings and do the right actions
Motion creates emotion.
Feelings follow actions. Negative actions equal negative feelings.
Positive actions result in positive emotions which lead to joy!
What I run to begins to define who I am.
What we run to in times of trouble will end up running us.
No matter what you are feeling run to God – you can never be wrong!
James 4:8 (NIV)
Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Feelings follow action. Motion precedes emotion.
If you have the faith and come near to God you will have joy when God comes close to you.
It all starts when in faith, we do the right things.
The world lives by feelings. We live by faith; we do the right thing even when we don’t feel the right way – that’s faith.
God says don’t be angry, don’t be sad, trust faith.
Express your stress to anybody but God you will always make a mess.
Venting never makes you feel better, it just reinforces your frustrations.
Ephesians 4:29 New International Version
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Our world is now "all feelings."
The problem is that if we all wait for the "right feelings" nothing will ever get done.
Obedience brings blessings.
Our joy is not rooted in our feelings, it’s rooted in our faith.
Philippians 4:4
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
Hebrews 12:2 New International Version
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Focus on Jesus; He will give you the courage and the faith to find your joy.
Jesus knew the cross was coming be He knew the joy that was coming to Him.
Put your faith in your Father, not in your feelings.
Your choice is always spiritual. The answer always begins with and ends with Jesus.
Never forget, God is in you and with you always. He will never forget you, He will never turn away. He is listening and always, God Loves You No Matter What!
