SERMON NOTES May 10, 2020
“Lessons From Lockdown," Pastor Justin Miller.
Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)
12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
With God all things are possible.
Relationship Rules for the Lockdown
1. Fill in the blank.
Admit that "I am _______________."
Luke 6:41-42 (NIV)
41“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Recognize and admit who you are and what you’re doing.
James says that the word of God is like a mirror; it exposes who and what we are.
1 Timothy 1:15 (NIV)
15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.
Rule number 2: Accept your need for Grace.
Grace is the great equalizer
Grace puts me in my place
Freely you have received Grace; freely give Grace.
Ephesians 4:2 (NIV)
2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
If you want to test God’s anger receive His Love and Grace but never give Grace and Love to others.
Don’t pay back in kind the evil or misdeeds done to you, instead pay forward with the Love and Grace from God.
Matthew 18:32-35 (NIV)
32“Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35“This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”
Rule number 3: Apply the new Commandment.
John 13:34-35 (NIV)
34“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Jesus wants us to care for each other on the deepest levels.
What sets us apart, what should be able to be seen by everyone is our love for one another.
Our love for one another flows out of our love for God, which is a result of God’s love for us.
1 John 4:19 (NIV)
19We love because he first loved us.
Loving one another the way Christ loved us is only possible with the supernatural power of God.
2 Peter 1:3 (NIV)
3His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
Jesus gives us the command to love one another, then gives us the power to do just that.
Never forget, God is in you and with you always. He will never forget you, He will never turn away. He is listening and always remember, God Loves You No Matter What!
