The Book of Jonah.
At the end of the day, God is less concerned with what we do for Him than who we are in Him. Few figures illustrate that truth better than Jonah. Focused on the prophet rather than his prophecy, the story of Jonah gives us a picture of a man on the run due to his own selfish desires. Instead of showing mercy to his enemies, he determined to keep God’s grace to himself rather than share it with those he considered undeserving. Can you relate? Over the course of 8 verse-by-verse sessions, pastor and author Eric Mason expands our vision to see that Jonah’s story is our own.

Come to Bible Study hungry; Spaghetti with meatballs, garden salad, garlic bread, ice tea, brownies & ice cream.

Children are welcome and child care is provided. Everyone is welcome and please, bring a friend or two or three…

Prayer Guide: The Prayer Guide is found at RealHopeInChrist.com.

Text to Tithe: Due to a number of requests for a more "modern" way to tithe, Text to Tithe has been created. It’s safe, fast, and secure. Just text the word, "give" to (786) 288-0839 and follow the link. Thanks!

PRAYER: Is Prayer Important?

The way of prayer is truly the way of life. Let us give ourselves to prayer! Jesus prayed much even though He was God’s only begotten Son from eternity past.

Through His words and His actions Jesus tells us how import prayer is.

“Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” Mark 1:35.

“You do not have because you do not ask.” James 4:2.

“Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:24

Prayer Partners are available at the front of the worship area after today’s service.

Jonah – Life on the Run Week 4

Main Idea: More than anything God wants us to share his heart. Jonah chapter four reminds us of how easy it is for God’s heart to be replaced by hypocrisy in our hearts. When we put our preference over God’s purpose, we have a problem!

Opening discussion:

Have you ever been upset because of someone else’s actions only to catch yourself later doing the same thing? Share the story.

Read Jonah 4

  1. Pastor Justin pointed out that Jonah’s story is important because it’s our story, including chapter four. What about Jonah’s story in chapter four is similar to our relationship with God?

  1. How can opinions and preferences get in the way of sharing God’s message of love and salvation?

  1. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says to “seek first His kingdom…” What do we often seek first instead? Why do we often seek those things first?

  1. Pastor Justin said, “God keeps showing me that his purpose is greater than my preferences. His commission is more important than my comfort.” Why is it important to think through these truths?

  1. Pastor Justin asked the question, “When God listens to your heart, does he hear his Son?” How would you describe the heart of Christ?

Next Steps: As God’s kids, in God’s house, we have to have God’s heart. When God listens to your heart, does he hear his Son? When God’s purpose is greater than our preferences, we have God’s heart. Try these next steps this week as a way to make your heart sound like His.

  1. Pray that God would open up your eyes to your preferences or comforts that may be contrary to His purpose and commission in your life.
  2. Read Matthew 6 and identify what part was the most challenging for you.

Ask God to help you trust Him with what was most challenging.

  1. Give it up. Take a break from the distraction, the comfort, the preference, etc. Give it up for a week or more!
  2. Replace it. Instead of the distraction, comfort or preference that may be keeping you from God’s purpose, replace it with time serving and/or praying for others.
