Greater: "God In You"

This week, we begin a new series called “Greater: A Study of the Holy Spirit.” In this series, the goal will be for us to get closer to God by understanding and accessing the gift of God’s Holy Spirit living in each of us.

John 16:4-7 New International Version (NIV)

4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,

5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’

6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.

7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

The Disciples didn’t want Jesus to leave. Put yourself in their place; what could be better than Emanuel, God with us?

Jesus tells them that better than God with us is God in us.

John 16: 7 New International Version (NIV)

7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the Advocate (From the Greek, “Parakletos,” which means “called to one’s side”; Para; “from close beside,” and Kaleo, “to make a call”).

  • The Holy Spirit is like a legal advocate who makes the judgment calls because he is close enough to the situation to make the right call.
  • It’s like giving someone the power of attorney.
  • You sign over your right to control.
  • You give control to someone you trust, someone who’s close enough to you to make the right call for you.
  • This is how Jesus describes the Holy Spirit, as an Advocate.
  • Jesus said that it is best for us if he leaves us and sends a second Advocate, so he can make the calls in our lives that God knows are best for us.
  • Jesus is God “WITH” us, while the Holy Spirit is God “IN” us.

When the Holy Spirit comes into our life He does not come for a visit. Our life becomes His. As soon as He comes into our life He takes control.

The Holy Spirit does the work that God has planned.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 New International Version (NIV)

19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Better than God with us is in us.

We have to realize that God is in control because when He comes into your life it is not your life any longer, it is His.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 New International Version (NIV)

21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us,

22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”

  • When the Holy Spirit comes into my life, my body is no longer my own.
  • My body becomes His Temple, His dwelling, his home.
  • The Holy Spirit doesn’t want to fight me for control of what Jesus paid for with his Life.
  • The Holy Spirit is God’s seal of ownership (2 Corinthians 1:21-22).
  • The Holy Spirit has Lordship over our lives so he calls the shots!
  • He convicts us and guides us into all truth.
  • We also need to yield to him, to submit to him.
  • He is our advocate from God who comes close to us to make the calls.

John 3: 8 New International Version (NIV)

8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

  • The wind controls us, we don’t control the wind. The wind blows wherever it pleases!
  • The Holy Spirit is like the wind. We don’t control him, he controls us.
  • We need to surrender to the Pneuma of God, the wind, the breath, the spirit of God and say “I’m yours. You’re in control.”
  • It’s about surrender/submission.
  • When we surrender to His spirit and let that fresh wind of God blow in our lives, that’s when things start to change. Mountains start to move, Miracles start to manifest.
  • Change the direction you’re facing. It’s all about surrender.
  • Let go and ask God to take control.
  • Fly forward with all the grace of God. It’s a great feeling.

No one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.

Be the one to let God know you love Him and that even if he never did another thing for you, you’re here because of what He’s already done for you in Jesus.

Don’t miss the blessing, don’t miss the gift. Ask for the Holy Spirit to take control of your life.
