No matter where you find yourself, you can make the most of today. In this inspirational series, Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow shares stories from his life to illustrate what it means to seize each day for God’s glory. He challenges us to step out in courage because this is the day to act.

                                          PRAYER: Is Prayer Important?

The way of prayer is truly the way of life. Let us give ourselves to prayer! Jesus prayed much even though He was God’s only begotten Son from eternity past.

Through His words and His actions Jesus tells us how import prayer is.

“Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” Mark 1:35.

“You do not have because you do not ask.” James 4:2.

“Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:24

Prayer Partners are available at the front of the worship area after today’s service.

SERMON NOTES
Pastor Mark Flood, October 20.
GREATER: Gifts of the Holy Spirit!

This week, we wrap up our series called “Greater: A Study of the Holy Spirit.” In this series, the goal was for you to get closer to God by understanding and accessing the gift of God’s Holy Spirit living in you. This week we’ll take a closer look at how the Spirit works through us to point others to Jesus.

1 Corinthians 12:1-3 New International Version (NIV)

Concerning Spiritual Gifts

1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.

2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.

3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

Paul tells us that he does not want us to be uninformed about the gifts of the Spirit. What can happen if we are “uninformed” about Spiritual Gifts?

Why do you think Paul tells us that “…no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit”?

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 New International Version (NIV)

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.

5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.

6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Each of these verses references a different Triune personage of God (Holy Spirit, Son, and Father) who operate in unity with each other.

How does this unity relate to us as members of His church?

1 Corinthians 12:7 New International Version (NIV)

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Pastor Mark told us that this one verse is key when it comes to getting out of the dark as it relates to Spiritual Gifts. Why is this verse considered a key verse?

1 Corinthians 12:15-26 New International Version (NIV)

15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.

16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.

17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?

18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

19 If they were all one part, where would the body be?

20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”

22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,

23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,

24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it,

25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.

26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

What main struggles does Paul reveal as they relate to Spiritual Gifts?

Pastor Mark reminds us that too often we experience Paralysis by Analysis when it comes to our Spiritual Gift. We get caught up in tests and profiles as if we need to be able to perfectly articulate our gift and give a reasoned theological explanation of it in order to use it. But the best way to figure out your spiritual gift is to get involved in spiritual work.

Here are some next steps you can take to help you determine and use your Spiritual Gift for the common good of God’s church and to point to Jesus.

1.        What need or opportunity is right in front of you?

2.        Where have you been blessed?

3.        What do you love?

a.         What are your passions?

b.         What are your interests?

4.        Remember…You NEED to use your gift!

a.         You were made by God to honor Him by investing your life in making a difference in other people’s lives.

b.         Changed Lives, Change Lives!
