Trials: Your Mess Is God’s Progress, Pastor Justin Miller.

Whew! 2020 certainly has brought with it plenty of problems and frustrations! James, Jesus’ brother, talks about turning trials into joy – are you ready to do that? Do you know how? Pastor Justin Miller begins our study of the book of James, faith·FULL dealing with just those questions.

James 1:1-4
1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings.
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Why should we choose joy when we’re going through a difficult times?
• If you’re in a trial, you’re on the right track!
• There’s a promise in your problems. Your pain is not in vain.
• Consider it joy when you’re going through the trials because your pain is PROOF of God’s presence.
• That frustration is actually confirmation that God is working all things together for your good.
• He’s finishing the work he started. He’s fulfilling his promises.

Philippians 1:6
6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Pastor Justin talked about cleaning up his patio turning into a 2-day project because of the bigger mess he had to deal with in the shed and garage. How did he relate his story to this being true with trials in our lives?
• Life may look like a mess, but that mess means God is moving.
• He’s making progress; making room for more, and getting you ready for revival.
• He’s completing the work he started. And sometimes to get us where He wants us – God has to move some things around, get some things out of the way, take some things to the dump.
• He is always Faithful to carry it to completion!

Pain really is PROOF of God’s presence.

Why is pain a good thing for a Christian to embrace?
• If there’s no pain – it’s probably NOT God!
• If it’s the enemy, it’ll be easy. •
• Trouble leads to perseverance, character, and hope.

Hebrews 12:11
11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Romans 5:4
4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.
The trials we face aren’t something God is doing TO US, He’s doing it FOR US.

What benefits come from remaining faith•FULL during these trials in our life?

James 1:3-4
3 The testing of your faith produces perseverance.
4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

2 Corinthians 12:10
10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 12:8
8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

How do we remain faith•FULL during our trials?
• Trust God’s Plan more than your feelings
• Stay focused in prayer and bible study
• Share with friends and family
• Seek help from counselor and church leaders

Philippians 4:13
13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

James 1:12
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Romans 8:18
18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Next Steps: What is Your Next Step in your faith•FULL journey?
• What’s the one thing you need to do, based on today’s discussion, to practice being more faith•FULL?
• If you are struggling in their trial, we encourage you to take the next step and do something about it!
• We are here to help as prayer partners and counselors.
