Submit and Surrender, Pastor Justin Miller.

“Arguing! Selfishness! Praying, but no response! None of this is my fault!” That’s not US talking, that’s the people in the Book of James’ time. Or IS it us? Are WE the problem in our relationship with God or in our crazy lives? And, if so, what do we do? James sees the problem, but he also sees the solution and hope. Pastor Justin Miller tells us James’ solution: Submit and Surrender. Are we ready?

James 4:1-5 New International Version
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us?

1. How does James describe our spiritual condition- yours and mine?
2. James says that we are the problem. How do we fix our problem?

Romans 7:14-25 New International Version
14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[a] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

3. Why do you think we continue to do the evil we don’t want to do, instead of the good we know we should do?

James 4:7-10 New International Version
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

4. Why does James tell us to draw near to God?

5. What does it look like to stop trying to fix yourself and submit to God?

Romans 7:24-25 New International Version
24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Next Steps: What’s your Next Step in your faith journey?
No matter your current circumstances; no matter what you’ve done or said in the past; no matter where you are in your faith journey, you can begin living a new life today by making Jesus Lord of your life, by drawing near to God, & by letting God transform you into a new creation.

1. Submit to God…Make Jesus the Lord of your life
Romans 10:9-10 New International Version
9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

2. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
James 4:8 English Standard Version
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

3. Be transformed.
Romans 12:2 New International Version
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Become a new creation…
2 Corinthians 5:17 New International Version
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Never forget, God is in you and with you always. He will never forget you, He will never turn away. He is listening and always, God Loves You No Matter What!

Wednesday, Doors open at 6pm, study starts at 6:30.
Not Your Mama’s Bible Study presents
Advent
J.D. Greear

The Christmas story, or Advent, is more than a sentimental myth or a quiet manger scene we use to decorate our living rooms. The Christmas story is the good news of God entering into our darkness. Join J.D. Greear in this four-session series as he takes a deeper look at Jesus as Emmanuel, our Wonderful Counselor, the Everlasting Father, and the great I Am. When you know Jesus, you will realize Christmas is more than a nice story—the arrival of Jesus changes everything.

Beverages and a light snack will be served.
Text to Tithe: Due to a number of requests for a more "modern" way to tithe, Text to Tithe has been created. It’s safe, fast, and secure. Just text the word, "give" to (786) 288-0839 and follow the link. Thanks!
